Abstract

This study examines the implementation of the drill method in learning Naskhi calligraphy for eighth-grade students at MTs Darul Hidayah, Central Lampung. The research aims to describe the process of applying the drill method, explore teachers’ and students’ perceptions, and identify its strengths and limitations in calligraphy learning. This study employed a qualitative descriptive approach. Data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews with the calligraphy teacher and students, and documentation of students’ written works. The findings indicate that the drill method was implemented systematically through demonstration, repetitive practice, correction, and varied exercises. The method contributed to improving students’ technical writing skills, particularly in letter accuracy, consistency, and neatness. Both teachers and students perceived the drill method as effective in strengthening writing habits and increasing students’ confidence. However, the study also found that repetitive practice may lead to boredom if not accompanied by instructional variation and individual guidance. Therefore, the drill method should be combined with varied learning activities, appropriate media, and differentiated support to maintain students’ motivation and accommodate diverse learning abilities. This study provides practical insights for madrasah teachers in developing effective strategies for teaching Arabic calligraphy.
