Publication Ethics
Al-Muallim: Jurnal Studi Pendidikan Islam upholds rigorous ethical standards in scientific publishing to maintain the integrity, quality, and credibility of its publications, as well as to ensure public trust in academic research. This publication ethics policy refers to the “Code of Conduct and Best-Practice Guidelines for Journal Editors” by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and the Regulation of the Head of Lembaga Ilmu Pengetahuan Indonesia (LIPI) No. 5 of 2014 concerning the Code of Conduct for Scientific Publications.
In addition, Al-Muallim: Jurnal Studi Pendidikan Islam also adheres to the “Principles of Transparency and Best Practice in Scholarly Publishing” jointly issued by COPE, the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), the Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association (OASPA), and the World Association of Medical Editors (WAME).
The following guidelines outline the ethical responsibilities of editors, reviewers, and authors. For further clarification, please refer to the official COPE guidelines.
1. Ethical Guidelines for Editors
Editorial Process
Editors must ensure that the peer review process is objective, fair, timely, and based solely on academic merit. Editors must communicate clearly with authors regarding the editorial workflow and decisions.
Editorial Decisions
Decisions to accept or reject a manuscript should be based on its originality, scholarly value, methodological rigor, and relevance to the journal’s scope, without discrimination based on race, gender, religion, nationality, institutional affiliation, or political views.
Confidentiality
Editors and editorial staff must treat all manuscripts with strict confidentiality. Information from submitted manuscripts may not be shared with unauthorized individuals and may not be used for personal advantage.
2. Ethical Guidelines for Reviewers
Accountability
Reviewers play a vital role in maintaining scholarly integrity. Reviews must be conducted ethically, independently, and based on academic merit. The review must be written by the invited reviewer themselves unless prior approval is granted to involve another party.
Objectivity
Reviewers must provide objective, constructive feedback with clear arguments. Personal attacks and unfounded criticisms are unacceptable.
Conflict of Interest
Reviewers must avoid reviewing manuscripts in which they have competing interests, whether personal, institutional, financial, or academic. Reviewers affiliated with the same institution as the author(s), or with recent collaborations, should decline the assignment.
Timeliness
Reviewers who are unable to complete a review within the given timeframe must inform the editor promptly and withdraw from the review process.
Confidentiality
Manuscripts must be treated as confidential documents. Reviewers may not share, cite, or use information obtained during the review for personal gain or to harm others.
Ethics Violations
If reviewers suspect ethical misconduct (e.g., plagiarism, data fabrication), they should notify the editor in confidence and not investigate independently. For further details, refer to the COPE Ethical Guidelines for Peer Reviewers.
3. Ethical Guidelines for Authors
Authorship
Only individuals who have made substantial contributions to the research should be listed as authors. Contributions may include study design, data collection and analysis, or drafting/revising the manuscript. The corresponding author must ensure that all co-authors approve the final version and consent to submission. Others who contributed but do not meet authorship criteria should be acknowledged in the Acknowledgments section.
Originality and Citation
Submitted manuscripts must be original and not under consideration elsewhere. All external sources, ideas, and quotations must be properly cited using the Chicago Manual of Style 17th Edition (Full Note). Direct quotations must be clearly indicated.
Reporting Standards
Authors must provide an accurate, transparent account of their research. The study should include sufficient detail and references to enable replication. Deliberate misrepresentation or falsification of data is unethical and unacceptable.
Plagiarism
Plagiarism is strictly prohibited. This includes copying from others without citation, paraphrasing without attribution, or using data collected by others without permission. Al-Muallim: Jurnal Studi Pendidikan Islam uses Turnitin to check for plagiarism. Manuscripts exceeding 20% similarity may be rejected or returned for correction.
Data Fabrication and Falsification
Manipulating data, results, images, or analysis tools to mislead readers constitutes academic misconduct and is not tolerated.
Data Availability
Authors are encouraged to make research data publicly accessible by depositing it in repositories such as www.re3data.org, or by uploading it as supplementary files during submission.
Redundant or Duplicate Publication
Manuscripts submitted to Al-Muallim: Jurnal Studi Pendidikan Islam must not be under consideration elsewhere. Simultaneous submission to multiple journals or redundant publication is unethical. Translations of previously published work may be considered with full disclosure and permission. Manuscripts derived from theses or expanded conference papers are acceptable with proper revision and citation.
Ethical Oversight
Authors conducting research involving human subjects, vulnerable populations, or sensitive data must follow ethical protocols. Al-Muallim: Jurnal Studi Pendidikan Islam aligns with the Ethical Guidelines for Educational Research by the British Educational Research Association (BERA) and expects authors to adhere accordingly.
Disclosure and Conflicts of Interest
Authors must disclose any financial or personal interests that could influence the findings or interpretations of their work. All sources of funding must be transparently reported.
4. Article Retraction Policy
Articles may be retracted under exceptional circumstances, such as confirmed plagiarism, data manipulation, or unethical conduct. Retraction will be determined by the Editor-in-Chief and will include:
-
The title and authors of the retracted article
-
A clear statement of the reason for retraction
-
An official retraction notice linked to the original article
